The 2019 Emmy Awards were filled with people I’ve never heard of. There are too many television shows nowadays! Plus, I’ve never seen one episode of “Game of Thrones,” and that alone left me pretty clueless when it came to a good half of the attendees. I was happy for Phoebe Waller-Bridge and all of the wins for “Fleabag,” though. That show’s great. But I skipped the ceremony itself.
I did, of course, pay a great deal of attention to the jewelry! I didn’t see as many big jewelry looks at the 2019 Emmy Awards as I saw at awards shows earlier in the year. However, there were still some nice pieces that caught my eye. In no particular order:
Zendaya in Cartier
Zendaya’s 18k white gold, diamond, emerald and onyx Panthère de Cartier earrings could not be more perfect with her Poison Ivy-inspired Vera Wang gown. I love those and her white gold and diamond Cartier Agrafe bracelet so much that I don’t even mind that she’s wearing dyed-to-match shoes.
This was a real Look with a capital L, so she could have gone minimalist with the jewelry. With that said, I’m glad she didn’t. This really works for me.
Busy Philipps in Irene Neuwirth
Busy looks like cotton candy in human form here, and I mean this as a high compliment. She’s wearing jewelry by her good friend Irene Neuwirth, as she often does on the red carpet. Her custom hair pins are from the new Tropical Flowers collection, while it looks like her earrings and ring are from the Cherry Blossom collection. I have such hard time getting red carpet ring photos, but at least you can get a good look at her jewelry from the neck up!
The dangle earrings are carved lavender jade and Akoya pearl, and the studs in her second holes are pink opal and Akoya pearl.
Margaret Qualley in Chanel Fine Jewelry
Margaret wore Chanel Fine Jewelry to compliment her Chanel couture gown and belt. She looks exquisite. It’s almost more of an Oscars red carpet look, but I’m not complaining.
All of the jewelry is perfect, but I particularly love the Comète earrings.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Irene Neuwirth
Julia wore a winner’s red carpet look. You know, when everyone thinks you’ll win so you dress the color of the statue? If she had won, she would be the most decorated performer by the Television Academy, ever.
But even though Phoebe Waller-Bridge beat her for “Fleabag,” she was a winner for me with her Irene Neuwirth diamond Super Bloom flower drop earrings in 18k yellow gold. I dig the gold-on-gold look.
Emilia Clarke in David Webb
Some people know her from “Game of Thrones;” I know her as the pretty British girl pretending to be Italian in that one Dolce & Gabbana commercial. (Seriously, though, should I watch “Game of Thrones?” I already know who wins!) Her David Webb earrings are so phenomenal. They feature cabochon cut opal drops, fluted cabochon cut sapphires, brilliant-cut diamonds, green enamel, platinum and 18k yellow gold. Yes, in case you were wondering, those suckers are heavy.
Emilia’s hair is perfectly styled to showcase these showstoppers, and man do they look great with her plunging navy Valentino gown. They’re also for sale as of this writing if you have a spare $72,000 and want to add them to your cart on the David Webb web site! (I did, just for fun.)
That’s all, folks! I hope you enjoyed my recap of the best jewelry seen on the 2019 Emmy Awards red carpet. Until next time!
The 2019 Oscars took place in Los Angeles Sunday night, which means the red carpet equivalent of the Super Bowl is over and done with. The entire internet is busy speculating about the true nature of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s relationship, but me? I just care about the jewelry. Even though I don’t include anyone on my list who isn’t pulling off their entire look, it was still hard to narrow it down. Everyone really brought their jewelry A game to the 2019 Oscars!
Marina de Tavira in Lorraine Schwartz
This is head-to-toe perfection and if I must choose, my favorite overall look of the night. Her J. Mendel dress is a lovely color and fits her perfectly. While good fit may seem like a small ask at an event like the Academy Freaking Awards, a not insignificant amount of women walk down the red carpet in ill-fitting gowns. Gown aside, her hair, makeup and nails are perfect. Most importantly, at least for our purposes, Marina is wearing Lorraine Schwarz ruby and diamond earrings. Look at how they mimic the graduating tiered ruffles of her dress!
That is not accidental, and I appreciate it. I also like her single statement ring, but there are no decent close-up photos of it, sadly. Just gorgeous. She is pure elegance. Oh, and if you haven’t streamed “Roma” yet, you’re missing out.
A lot of people weren’t fans of Charlize’s Dior dress. While it’s not my favorite Oscars dress of all time, I think it’s kind of cool. Certainly, her Bulgari Serpenti jewelry looks amazing with it. I like that the necklaces are on top of the fabric. That can be hard to pull off, but this works. And, although you can’t quite see them both here, she has a Serpenti bracelet on each wrist. All of this, plus the pops of color on her earrings and rings, makes for a major red carpet win for Bulgari– and Charlize. With less adventurous jewelry choices, she could have ended up looking too staid.
This is exactly how the previous year’s winner who is presenting should look. Elegant, chic, and not too attention-grabbing.
I really like the Chopard ruby and diamond necklace that was paired with her menswear-inspired gown, as well as the classic diamond studs that were chosen to accompany it. Allison looks good in black, which is a surprisingly hard color to pull off on the red carpet (more on that later). She also appears to be wearing a matching ruby and diamond ring, which you can see a bit of below.
“Crazy Rich Asians” mama Michelle Yeoh has an impressive jewelry collection of her own, but at the 2019 Oscars she opted to borrow Chopard diamond earrings and a diamond statement bracelet to wear with her Elie Saab Haute Couture gown. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I applaud her going big with the bracelet even though her dress had a lot going on.
Olivia Coleman in Chopard
Initially, I thought Olivia Coleman was wearing a traditional pair of Chopard diamond drop earrings with an additional single diamond earring attached to the top of her left ear. But then I came across this picture and wasn’t so sure anymore:
Much like gowns that are plucked from the runway and changed a bit for the red carpet, so too can borrowed jewelry can be customized if worn for a special event by a special enough person. That’s probably what happened here. Olivia preferred an asymmetrical look, so they simply removed the top earring and connector on one side. I love it.
She looks phenomenal. Not a lot of women could pull this off, but it works. Her kunzite, diamond and 18k rose gold Sutra statement earrings are perfect with her Reem Acra dress! Did you know Sutra is a family-owned brand based in Houston? We carry their jewelry at Zadok if you want to come try some on!
Thank God Julia did us all a favor and posted this photo herself, because I was worried we wouldn’t get a good look at her jewelry since she didn’t walk the red carpet! How fun are these designs from Cindy Chao? The earrings have 16 pink conch pearls, which are an extremely rare pearl formed only in a certain variety of Caribbean conch shell. The pear-shaped diamonds alone weigh 20.28 ct. The branch bracelet is equally as cool, and has 57.51 ct. of diamonds set in 18k white gold.
Okay, you know what? Julia Roberts is my other favorite overall look of the night. Unique designs like these worn at a traditional awards show like the Oscars will always win me over.
We all wondered how Tiffany & Co. x Lady Gaga would top the Aurora necklace at the Golden Globes. Well, this is how. Pull perhaps the most famous fancy yellow diamond of all time, the Tiffany Diamond, out of the Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue display and have it be worn for the first time since it graced Audrey Hepburn’s neck in publicity photos for a little movie called “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” The 2019 Oscars was the first time this diamond had ever been worn on a red carpet. Yeah, that’ll do it! Aurora who?
Let’s get a better look at the whole ensemble:
You know, I get it. The custom Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress and leather gloves are a modern homage to Audrey Hepburn’s iconic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Givenchy style. Above all, it’s meant to be a nice frame for the necklace, right? But this much black honestly looks harsh on her. I can forgive that, though, because she does look elegant and the whole thing will surely go down in red carpet history. She did, however, change into a different black dress by Brandon Maxwell for her performance and the after parties.
I like this one better. The lack of gloves helps the black be less overwhelming, and I like the cut of the bodice a lot. The necklace still looks phenomenal, of course.
Because of the Tiffany Diamond necklace, Lady Gaga’s matching earrings get no love. No one talks about them! I like the alternating north-south and east-west set emerald cut diamonds leading down to fancy yellow cushion cut diamonds. Very pretty, and they complimented but did not take away from the necklace.
That rounds out my 2019 Oscars coverage! I have a lot of fun doing red carpet recaps like this during awards season. So if you enjoyed reading about red carpet jewels at the 2019 Oscars, see my previous recaps below.
The 2019 SAG Awards had a kind of busted-looking gray carpet, not a red one. Fortunately, that didn’t keep many of the stars in attendance from going all-out with fabulous red carpet jewels. Below are my favorite jewelry looks of the evening. I stuck to my usual caveat: if the head-to-toe look doesn’t work, you don’t make my list.
Rachel Brosnahan in Irene Neuwirth
Rachel teamed up once again with Irene Neuwirth, wearing a custom-made pearl and diamond version of a pair of earring available for purchase on the LA designer’s web site: shoulder-dusting ribbon earrings. Note the matching ring on her right index finger. The whimsical design of these earrings is so sweet and perfect with her Dior dress. And you know everyone at Irene Neuwirth was happy when she did this little hair toss onstage:
She looks incredible. Even stunning beauties like her can bungle an awards show appearance, but this entire ensemble is flawless. That Oscar de la Renta gown, her hair, makeup, the matching black belt and shoes, and of course those vintage Harry Winston earrings. Just look at them sparkle! To die for.
Emily Blunt is a treasure. Few people could pull off this pink, ruffled Michael Kors creation, but she looks fantastic. The Forevermark diamond jewelry is a perfect complement to her look. Let’s take a closer look at her earrings and ring, shall we?
The earrings contain 11.73 ct. of diamonds set in 18k white gold. The one of a kind Force of Nature ring has a really cool back story. The 3.48 ct. center diamond is the 2 millionth (!) diamond cut by Forevermark, and the design of the ring was inspired by the horns of the Kudu, an African antelope. It just so happens those horns perfectly complement the ruffles on Emily’s dress.
What to pair with a Givenchy Haute Couture dress featuring metallic ostrich feathers? A design that’s a little wild, perhaps. I love these swingy, sparkly Cartier earrings from the Panthère de Cartier collection.
This Chanel dress is stunning, but let’s get a better look at the earrings.
These are the Chanel San Marco earrings from the Les Perles de Chanel collection, featuring Gold South Sea pearls, Akoya pearls, yellow sapphires and diamonds. They match her dress perfectly, and I imagine that’s no accident. It’s possible that the dress was designed around them, but I can’t be sure. Either way, I am on board with all of it.
It’s no surprise that Lady Gaga is sticking with Tiffany & Co. this awards season. While it’s hard to follow a necklace like the one she wore at the Golden Globes, I think it’s great that she went with yellow gold, a metal we don’t see much in awards-show jewelry. Let’s get a better look.
The necklace and earrings are from the 2019 Tiffany Blue Book collection, a high jewelry collection set to be released later in the year. The yellow gold really pops with her all-white Dior dress, and the diamonds are set in platinum, making them stand out. The bangles she’s wearing on both wrists are from the Tiffany True collection.
The 2019 Golden Globe Awards red carpet was chock full of statement-making jewels. More is more was the jewelry rule of the day, and those of us who work in the industry were thrilled. When I sat down to choose my favorite red carpet jewels of the evening, I gave myself one caveat: in order for someone to make my list, his or her whole look had to work. In no particular order, here are my favorites.
Rachel Brosnahan in Irene Neuwirth
These mismatched one-of-a-kind earrings from LA designer Irene Neuwirth caught my eye immediately, even looking at a full-length shot. I noticed right away that the larger stones were yellow and cut in different shapes. Later, I confirmed that those stones are yellow tourmalines, and the light blue stones are blue tourmalines (perhaps indicolite). It’s cool that she was adventurous enough to choose an asymmetrical pair of earrings set with yellow gemstones to wear on the red carpet. Most attendees lean toward the traditional in both design and stone choice, so cheers to Rachel for doing something different. Bonus points for her perfect marigold Prada gown.
Allison Janney in David Webb and LeVian
This was the perfect necklace to pair with her turquoise Christian Siriano dress. I love the doubled chain and where the pendant hits on her chest. This is legendary American jewelry house David Webb’s Heraldic Thorn Link Necklace from the Ancient World collection. The combination of cabochon emeralds, carved ruby leaves, cabochon turquoise and diamonds set in 18k yellow gold and platinum knocked my socks off. Allison gets bonus points for the use of a red bag, which helps bring out the red of the rubies in the necklace as well as the rubies in her LeVian studs.
Dakota Fanning in Vintage
Dakota Fanning is giving me modern Cinderella here and oh man, am I into it. Her platinum and diamond garland necklace is actually a vintage find provided by Beladora. It was made circa 1995, but the bow and flower motifs lead me to believe it was inspired by the Edwardian era. It is simply divine with the clean lines of her Armani Prive dress and makes for a great statement piece. Oh, and if you’re a fan as well, it appears to be for sale.
The bow detailing is a particularly sweet touch and helps keeps this big diamond look age-appropriate for the 24-year-old actress. The back of her dress has a vertical row of five fabric bows, so there’s a nice tie-in there. Haha, tie-in. Because bows! (Sorry). I like that she paired it with sleek diamond studs. I think a drop or dangle would have made this look a little too Kensington Palace ball.
Julia Roberts in Chopard
Julia Roberts was a top overall look for me. This perfectly tailored Stella McCartney dress-pants hybrid (can you tell I’m not a fashion blogger?) looks exquisite on her. With a neutral-colored one-shouldered top like this, she had many different styles of earrings to choose from. The Chopard double drop linear earrings make a statement without overwhelming a look that has a lot going on.
The size of the pear-shaped diamonds and the length of the earrings are really working for her, proportionally. Their lines just work so well with her long neck and old Hollywood wavy hair. Well done, Julia, well done. She also gets bonus points for wearing gold toe rings on the red carpet and making it work, but good luck finding a decent photo of them online. Trust me, I tried.
Elisabeth Moss in Vintage Neil Lane
Elisabeth Moss, aka my BFF Peggy from “Mad Men,” always looks great. I love menswear-inspired looks on the red carpet and this navy Christian Dior tuxedo dress is super cute and appropriate for the Globes. But what really caught my eye were the mid-century Hollywood Neil Lane necklace and earrings she chose to go with her sleek ensemble.
The jewels elevate the whole look. Looking at the above, which is the best close-up I could find, I actually don’t think this is a matching set. But the earrings and necklace pair perfectly and look stunning.
Anne Hathaway in Lorraine Schwartz
Anne Hathaway is a red carpet veteran at this point and can wear an Elie Saab head-to-toe leopard-print gown if she wants to, especially if she pairs it with earrings like these. Lorraine Schwartz is a red-carpet jewelry mainstay and her brown and cognac diamond mesh earrings perfectly match the colors found in Anne’s risky dress. What can I say? I am a basic bitch who loves things that match. Plus, look at them when they move (this is what really sold me on them):
Lady Gaga in Tiffany & Co.
If you haven’t seen or read about Lady Gaga’s custom Tiffany & Co. Aurora necklace at the Golden Globes this year, you officially live under a rock. It’s unavoidable. And you know what? It’s freaking spectacular. You don’t really get the full impact until you see it move, so here you go.
Lady Gaga was dressed to win, and she did, for best original song. I’m glad that she went big with her entire look because the whole thing really worked for her. If anyone can pull off an enormous periwinkle Valentino ball gown with matching hair, purple eye shadow and a one-of-a-kind necklace that features a 20.00 ct. pear-shaped diamond drop, it’s Gaga. Bless her for always keeping the red carpet interesting. It’s been a lot of fun to see her in her latest incarnation: movie star.
Saoirse Ronan in Chopard
Saoirse Ronan won the night for me. In addition to being my pick for overall best dressed, her emerald and diamond Chopard earrings were absolutely stunning. They really made her whole look. Good styling goes a long way and while they could have weighed another look down or aged her, the earrings are just perfect with her hair, makeup and sleek Gucci dress. The deep green next to her light blue eyes and slicked-back blonde hair looks fabulous. She really knocked it out of the park here.
I’m sure these platinum, diamond and emerald chandelier earrings were heavy as hell, but I believe they are clip-ons so hopefully our dear Saoirse wasn’t suffering too much. (Platinum is heavier than gold and isn’t used as much as other metals in big earrings for that reason).
Honorable Mention: Dudes
It was a fun year for the men as well! These two were my favorites.
And there you have it! My top picks for red carpet jewels at the 2019 Golden Globe Awards. Awards show season has just begun, so stay tuned for more.
