Red Carpet Jewels: The 2019 Oscars

The 2019 Oscars took place in Los Angeles Sunday night, which means the red carpet equivalent of the Super Bowl is over and done with. The entire internet is busy speculating about the true nature of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s relationship, but me? I just care about the jewelry. Even though I don’t include anyone on my list who isn’t pulling off their entire look, it was still hard to narrow it down. Everyone really brought their jewelry A game to the 2019 Oscars!

Marina de Tavira in Lorraine Schwartz

I can’t imagine a more perfect pair of earrings for her to wear with this dress.

This is head-to-toe perfection and if I must choose, my favorite overall look of the night. Her J. Mendel dress is a lovely color and fits her perfectly. While good fit may seem like a small ask at an event like the Academy Freaking Awards, a not insignificant amount of women walk down the red carpet in ill-fitting gowns. Gown aside, her hair, makeup and nails are perfect. Most importantly, at least for our purposes, Marina is wearing Lorraine Schwarz ruby and diamond earrings. Look at how they mimic the graduating tiered ruffles of her dress!

That is not accidental, and I appreciate it. I also like her single statement ring, but there are no decent close-up photos of it, sadly. Just gorgeous. She is pure elegance. Oh, and if you haven’t streamed “Roma” yet, you’re missing out.

A lot of people weren’t fans of Charlize’s Dior dress. While it’s not my favorite Oscars dress of all time, I think it’s kind of cool. Certainly, her Bulgari Serpenti jewelry looks amazing with it. I like that the necklaces are on top of the fabric. That can be hard to pull off, but this works. And, although you can’t quite see them both here, she has a Serpenti bracelet on each wrist. All of this, plus the pops of color on her earrings and rings, makes for a major red carpet win for Bulgari– and Charlize. With less adventurous jewelry choices, she could have ended up looking too staid.

Allison Janney in Chopard

This is exactly how the previous year’s winner who is presenting should look. Elegant, chic, and not too attention-grabbing.

I really like the Chopard ruby and diamond necklace that was paired with her menswear-inspired gown, as well as the classic diamond studs that were chosen to accompany it. Allison looks good in black, which is a surprisingly hard color to pull off on the red carpet (more on that later). She also appears to be wearing a matching ruby and diamond ring, which you can see a bit of below.

“Crazy Rich Asians” mama Michelle Yeoh has an impressive jewelry collection of her own, but at the 2019 Oscars she opted to borrow Chopard diamond earrings and a diamond statement bracelet to wear with her Elie Saab Haute Couture gown. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I applaud her going big with the bracelet even though her dress had a lot going on.

Initially, I thought Olivia Coleman was wearing a traditional pair of Chopard diamond drop earrings with an additional single diamond earring attached to the top of her left ear. But then I came across this picture and wasn’t so sure anymore:

Much like gowns that are plucked from the runway and changed a bit for the red carpet, so too can borrowed jewelry can be customized if worn for a special event by a special enough person. That’s probably what happened here. Olivia preferred an asymmetrical look, so they simply removed the top earring and connector on one side. I love it.

Angela Bassett in Sutra

She looks phenomenal. Not a lot of women could pull this off, but it works. Her kunzite, diamond and 18k rose gold Sutra statement earrings are perfect with her Reem Acra dress! Did you know Sutra is a family-owned brand based in Houston? We carry their jewelry at Zadok if you want to come try some on!

Julia Roberts in Cindy Chao

Thank God Julia did us all a favor and posted this photo herself, because I was worried we wouldn’t get a good look at her jewelry since she didn’t walk the red carpet! How fun are these designs from Cindy Chao? The earrings have 16 pink conch pearls, which are an extremely rare pearl formed only in a certain variety of Caribbean conch shell. The pear-shaped diamonds alone weigh 20.28 ct. The branch bracelet is equally as cool, and has 57.51 ct. of diamonds set in 18k white gold.

Okay, you know what? Julia Roberts is my other favorite overall look of the night. Unique designs like these worn at a traditional awards show like the Oscars will always win me over.

Lady Gaga in Tiffany & Co.

Lady Gaga in Tiffany & Co. Tiffany Diamond necklace and yellow diamond earrings
I wonder how much Gaga got paid to be a brand ambassador for Tiffany & Co. This partnership sure worked out for everyone involved!

We all wondered how Tiffany & Co. x Lady Gaga would top the Aurora necklace at the Golden Globes. Well, this is how. Pull perhaps the most famous fancy yellow diamond of all time, the Tiffany Diamond, out of the Tiffany & Co. Fifth Avenue display and have it be worn for the first time since it graced Audrey Hepburn’s neck in publicity photos for a little movie called “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” The 2019 Oscars was the first time this diamond had ever been worn on a red carpet. Yeah, that’ll do it! Aurora who?

The Tiffany Diamond
The Tiffany Diamond was found in South Africa in 1877 and purchased by Charles Lewis Tiffany the following year.

Let’s get a better look at the whole ensemble:

You know, I get it. The custom Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen dress and leather gloves are a modern homage to Audrey Hepburn’s iconic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Givenchy style. Above all, it’s meant to be a nice frame for the necklace, right? But this much black honestly looks harsh on her. I can forgive that, though, because she does look elegant and the whole thing will surely go down in red carpet history. She did, however, change into a different black dress by Brandon Maxwell for her performance and the after parties.

I like this one better. The lack of gloves helps the black be less overwhelming, and I like the cut of the bodice a lot. The necklace still looks phenomenal, of course.

Everyone is forgetting that she also wore matching earrings!

Because of the Tiffany Diamond necklace, Lady Gaga’s matching earrings get no love. No one talks about them! I like the alternating north-south and east-west set emerald cut diamonds leading down to fancy yellow cushion cut diamonds. Very pretty, and they complimented but did not take away from the necklace.

That rounds out my 2019 Oscars coverage! I have a lot of fun doing red carpet recaps like this during awards season. So if you enjoyed reading about red carpet jewels at the 2019 Oscars, see my previous recaps below.
